Every day is interrupted by notifications, messages, and short videos. Attention gets chopped into pieces, and the time available for real concentration keeps shrinking.
Why focus is difficult
The brain is drawn to novelty. Every task switch requires another warm-up, so efficiency drops. Multitasking is usually rapid switching, not genuine parallel work.
Deep work is not just a skill. It is a habit that has to be deliberately protected.
A few methods I use
- Turn notifications off: only the people who truly need immediate access can interrupt.
- Use time blocks: divide the day into periods with one clear task each.
- Take a digital pause: do not check the phone during the first hour after waking.
- Create one focused place: the same desk and the same time every day.
When you actually focus, difficult work often turns out to require only one uninterrupted stretch of time.
